According to his father, the actual suspect reportedly snatched the handbag and escaped on a motorcycle. As the victim called for help, members of the public allegedly pursued and attacked Gongodyo instead, believing he was responsible.
The rugby player sustained serious injuries during the attack and was rushed to Mulago National Referral Hospital. Despite efforts by medical personnel, he passed away later that evening.
