A footballer with roots in Uganda's West Nile region has made history on the world's biggest stage after appearing for Australia at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Jason Kato Geria, a professional defender whose family originates from Arua, made his FIFA World Cup debut for the Australian national team during their 2-0 victory over Türkiye. Geria entered the match in the 73rd minute, helping the Socceroos secure an important opening group-stage win.

Born in Canberra, Australia, to Ugandan parents, Geria proudly carries his Lugbara heritage. His parents, Moses and Agnes Geria, left Uganda during the early 1980s and later settled in Australia, where Jason was born and raised.

The 33-year-old defender's journey to the World Cup has been remarkable. He first represented Australia in 2016 but then spent eight years without a national team call-up. His persistence paid off when he was recalled in 2024 and eventually earned a place in Australia's final World Cup squad.
