Arrest of Erias Lukwago Sparks National Debate in Uganda
On Monday morning, armed security personnel reportedly arrested Erias Lukwago from his home in Wakaliga. The operation quickly drew public attention and concern from sections of the legal community and civil society.
Shortly after the incident, Uganda’s Chief of Defence Forces, Muhoozi Kainerugaba, made a series of social media posts referring to the arrest. In one post, he stated that he had “captured a fool and taken him to the basement,” and also shared an image appearing to show Lukwago in military custody.
The remarks and manner of the arrest were strongly criticized by opposition figures and human rights advocates, who described the incident as a violation of due process and raised concerns about unlawful detention.
Court Appearance and Charges
After more than 48 hours in custody, Lukwago was transferred from military detention to civilian police and later presented before a magistrate’s court.
He was charged with misprision of treason, an offence under Ugandan law relating to allegedly failing to report knowledge of a planned overthrow of government authority. Lukwago denied all charges in court.
Political and Legal Context
Authorities have linked the case to an ongoing treason trial involving opposition leader Kizza Besigye.
Lukwago has also been part of Besigye’s legal defence team in related proceedings, which has further intensified political scrutiny around the case.
Background and Developments
The tensions appear to stem from Lukwago’s recent legal engagements, including involvement in sensitive human rights and political cases. Prior to his arrest, he was reportedly preparing legal action involving state officials.
Following his court appearance, Lukwago was remanded to Luzira Prison as legal proceedings continue.
Public Reaction
The incident has triggered widespread debate across Uganda’s legal and political circles. Critics argue it highlights concerns about the rule of law and civilian oversight, while government supporters maintain that investigations into national security matters should proceed without interference.
